Geologists tell us that Mount Konocti lava flows have been regular occurrences from 2.2 million years ago to about 10,000 years ago. The volcanoes are now dormant but numerous hot springs and the Geysers geothermal power generating facility remind us that the earth below is still hot and molten. If you're planning a vacation you probably want to know what is the best time of year to visit Lake County? Those who live here will comment that that's a tough question because just about any time of year is great if you're living here. The summer months remain the most popular for vacationing families and it is the time of year when most events take place. Lake County weather varies from quite hot summer days (average high is 95, low 57) to temperatures that hover around freezing and sometimes below in the winter ( 60 high average, 32 low). One can expect a number of days over 100 degrees in the summer while the "average" temperature is in the 90's. The winter average highs are in the fifties and the lows are in the thirties. Average humidity in the summer is 30% and 50% in the winter. The spring and fall of the year can offer some of the most pleasant day/night temperature combinations when we enjoy the luxury and not heat or air conditioning is needed. The fall of the year is particularly enjoyable when the lake temperatures have not dropped that much, the days are warm (well into October and sometimes November) and the nights are pleasantly cool. The trend toward year-round operations of schools with staggered vacation schedules offers an opportunity for the visitor to sample from all the seasonal variations in Lake County.Rainfall in the Clear Lake basin averages 25 inches a year which helps to fill the lake back up every year and the water temperatures of the water vary from the forties in the winter to the seventies in the summer. 1998 was the year of El Nino when we saw about twice normal rainfall figures and some flooding at lake level occurred. Snowfall is possible every year, even down to lake level but not all that likely. If there is snowfall it is usually gone by noon except in the higher elevations of the county (like Cobb mountain) where the snow can remain on the ground for days. Lake county is served by one local airport, Lampson Field near Lakeport. There is no regular passenger service but Lampson is ideal for the recreational flyer or traveler coming to the area. Major airline facilities include Sacramento Metro (approximately two hours from Clear Lake) and the Bay Area airports including Oakland and San Francisco. Auto rentals are available locally as well as site seeing flights by local charter services. Clear Lake, California's largest natural freshwater lake with over 43,000 surface acres and a capacity of 1,155,000 acre feet which translates to 376,565,294,000 gallons. Depths go to 60 feet and the average depth is 28 feet. The average temperature is 61 degrees which is a bit nippy for swimming but realize that summer water temperatures approach 80 degrees at times. There are two hospitals, one at each end of the county. Sutter Lakeside is located in Lakeport and Adventist Health Redbud Community Hospital is located in the City of Clearlake. Emergency callers should use 9-1-1. There are three local newspapers including the Clear Lake Observer, Lake County Record Bee, and the Middletown Times. Local radio stations include KXBX-FM at 98.3 FM, KXBX AM at 1270 and KNTI at 99.5 FM.
